With this school year coming to a close, educational institutions are now in the process of planning and budgeting for next year. For many schools this means planning for additional investments due to the expansion of their school. All expansions need to be paid for and getting maximum value with limited budgets is something every charter faces. We spoke with TEQlease Education Finance Specialist Dan Riggs, to address these issues and give advice on how financing can help a school acquire all needed equipment while still staying within budget.

Q: Why should a school look into financing as an option to obtain their equipment?

Dan Riggs: There are multiple reasons a school should finance equipment acquisitions. The main reason is to not pay the full cost of the equipment out of pocket. This allows the school to preserve existing cash, which can be used for unseen expenses that come up throughout the year as well as other school expenses. Spreading the costs over several budget periods rather than paying for it all at once also allows a school to get more of the equipment they need now, rather than just a portion of it. The school is not constrained by its current budget allocation.

Q: What kind of equipment can be financed?

Dan Riggs: Schools can lease all of the capital equipment it uses, including, but not limited to, computers, software, tablets, school furniture, modular classrooms, cameras and security equipment, copiers, gym and fitness equipment, phone and paging systems, and playground equipment. In the past, we have even been able to lease textbooks, which is pretty amazing.

Q: How long does the entire process usually take?

Dan Riggs: One of the common misconceptions with financing is that it is going to be a long, overly strenuous process. However, this isn’t the case. Credit approval can be completed within a day. If the lease structure is complex it may take longer. Funding typically occurs within 24-48 hours after delivery of the equipment and your confirmation that the equipment you received from the vendor is complete and acceptable. Much of it actually depends on what the time frame is for the school. We have gotten certain transactions done as fast as a week, however realistically equipment vendors often take longer to deliver the equipment. Some schools prefer to get approved before selecting what equipment they want, so that lease cost and a budget can be established. That way the school has a view of what it can spend, and all that remains is receiving quotes from vendors and selecting their equipment.

Q: What happens at the end of the term?

Dan Riggs: Well this really depends on what kind of financing the customer chooses. The most common types are fair market value (FMV) (also called a true lease) options at the end of the term and dollar buyout leases (also called a capital lease) where the school is basically “buying” the equipment for $1.00. Schools that choose to work with an FMV lease often obtain and lease equipment that quickly depreciates in value. Dollar buyout leases are ideal for those who plan on keeping the equipment at the end of the lease term, and for equipment with a long useful life. The type of lease you select will often depend on the type of equipment, and how you plan to use it, and this will determine what you do with the equipment at the end of the term.

Q: Why should we choose TEQlease Education Finance?

Dan Riggs: TEQlease Education Finance has been providing equipment leasing solutions to schools for many years. We are regarded as one of the leading education equipment lease financing companies in the United States, and our expertise with charter schools is unparalleled. Our education specialists have years of experience and understand the issues that are particular to schools. We will present you with the best financing options for your charter school. Our goal is to help you get the equipment you need quickly with a payment structure that meets your budgetary needs.

So, June was another month with the “Economy” under the microscope. But according to Matt Busigin, “This Is NOT An Economy That’s On The Verge Of Recession”. “There has been resurgence in recession calls after the past few months’ soft data. This is likely wrong. None of the key recession-casting inputs (ISM: PMI 53.5, Real Retail Sales +3.5% y/y, Fixed Private Investment +10% y/y, Auto Sales +17.4%) signal US recession.

No great private imbalances exist. There is no over-investment. No great over-confidence in sentiment exists. Marginal investment opportunities are fatter & juicier than at any other time in modern history.

With this back-drop, from where does a recession emerge?”

Tech: Your Mac is Not Invincible

Think your Mac is invincible? Maybe this article from Mashable will change your mind: 3 Ways to Protect Your Mac From Malware . Bottom line is as “more users make the switch to Apple products, the more we can expect criminal malware to follow.” In other Apple news, Business Insider released their list of “The Best Gadgets Of 2012.” Not surprising, Apple is packing the list. On a related note, want to know more about the technology powering Siri? Check out Why Siri Matters.

Ready for a tablet? If you are in the hunt check out CNN Money’s recent review “ Is Microsoft’s new tablet the most inventive yet, or is it just another iPad copycat According to the CNN reviewer, “Surface is a remarkable accomplishment for Microsoft. But a crucial question remains: Is it an iPad competitor or a PC.” Surface isn’t the only new tablet to launch. Google unveiled their new tablet “The Nexus 7” at $199. The tablet will hit the market in mid-July .

Social Media: Facebook Did What?

While many of us kept our eye on the Facebook IPO, Facebook continued to keep busy with user changes. Last week Facebook removed everyone’s email from their profile and replaced it with a @facebook.com address. Don’t like it? Check out “Here’s How to Fix Yours” via Lifehacker.

By the way, before you try advertising your SMB on Facebook, you need to read “What SMBs Need to Know About Advertising on Facebook.”

Not to be out done by the other social media platforms making news, Twitter has turned off the ability to sync tweets with your LinkedIn profile.

If the launch of the iPad didn’t cause enough of a stir with predictions of the imminent demise of the personal computer, Gartner recently announced, “the reign of the personal computer as the sole corporate access device is coming to a close, and by 2014, the personal cloud will replace the personal computer at the center of users’ digital lives.”

Questions to think about include how will this impact your business, the products and services that you deliver, and whether your business will be ready?

According to Steve Kleynhans, research vice president at Gartner, “Many call this era the post-PC era, but it isn’t really about being ‘after’ the PC, but rather about a new style of personal computing that frees individuals to use computing in fundamentally new ways to improve multiple aspects of their work and personal lives.”

The consumerization of IT has been taking place for nearly a decade. However, Gartner believes the next wave is starting to place as the following factors come together:

Users are more technologically savvy and have very different expectations of technology.

The Internet and social media have empowered and emboldened users.

The rise of powerful, affordable mobile devices changes the equation for users.

Users have become innovators.

Through the democratization of technology, users of all types and status within the organizations can now have similar technology available to them.

How will your business respond?

Apple made news again by unveiling iBooks2, an updated and enhanced version of Its iBook software that brings to life interactive textbooks, and iBooks Author, a new app that “makes it free and simple to create interactive textbooks for the iPad”, and a new iTunes U aimed squarely at higher education. This app integrates with the new iBooks app and more than 100 courses created by universities around the world are available. Notably, iBooks is only available on the iPhone or iPad. According to Joshua Benton of the Nieman Journalism Lab in his article “The day the bookshelf shook: Four lessons for news orgs from today’s Apple iBooks announcements”:

One of the standout new textbooks announced today was E.O. Wilson’s Life on Earth, the Harvard professor’s attempt to rethink the biology textbook. Aside from what wisdom it will bring about the Mesozoic Era, perhaps its most interesting element is that it is being released chapter by chapter. The first two chapters are available for download now; the remaining ones will be available later at an “aggressive” price.

What does this mean for education? As an Apple Financial Services partner we believe that today’s announcement will drive an even greater demand for and use of the iPad in schools. Over the last two years we are leasing in increasing number of iPads to our charter school customers . Forrester agrees with our assessment of the growing demand for iPads in the classroom. In their blog post about today’s announcement, Forrester reports that “the iPad –which now outsells Macs in schools, according to Apple—is capable of much more than what has previously been produced.” Looks like Apple is intent on reinventing how our students learn.
